Narrabeen's History

The naming of Narrabeen is something of a puzzle.  One theory is that it came from narrow beans which grew in the area and were eaten by colonists.  Some say it comes from an Aboriginal word for swan, others say that it’s the name of an Aboriginal child who helped colonial soldiers in their hunt for escaped convicts, or it was close to the name Aborigines gave to a stream in Narrabeen; Narrowbine.  The 1800's saw a number of land grants made to colonists and by 1815 the area became more and more popular . The mid-1800s saw Narrabeen as  a popular holiday destination for those living close to the centre of Sydney. Now, Narrabeen's breath-taking beaches, spectacular lakes, lifestyle options, cafes and restaurants has allowed it to become a highly sought after area in Sydney and along the Northern Beaches.
